Cousins

We have had so much fun over the past two weeks with our cousins Sierra (11) and Kian (4). They come every year and stay with us and go to VBX. The kids have so much fun playing together. Grammy helps out a TON by making all of our breakfasts and lunches (she cleans up too ). We did lots of fun things like swimming at KlineLine and making sandcastles, face-painting, cake decorating, sewing and lots of other crazy things. The kids had so much fun this year just making up things to do.

Vacation Bible Xtreme..........

We had another fun year this year at VBX. The theme was "Crocodile Dock." The kids learned to fearlessly shine God's light. We took our neighbors and our cousins each day so we had quite a car full. They were so cute, singing all the songs and doing the motions. It is for sure a tiring event but so worth it. There were over 250 kids and 80 workers. The kids raised money this year to buy orphans in Rwanda shoes and together brought in $1300.......enough to buy 326 pairs of Crocs! It was so exciting!

My Mexican Hammock

Oh my goodness! This is my new FAVORITE thing.....seriously it is! I waited three long years for this. This hammock was purchased on our 10 year anniversary trip to Cancun. The problem getting it hung up was that it didn't have the giant dowel to hang it on because I thought that there would be no way in the world that the airlines would let me get on the plane with a giant wooden weapon so I stashed it in the hotel room and figured we'd just find one when we got home. Yeah, so when we got on the plane, there were about 10 other people holding these hammock chairs in their laps. Good grief! So every Mother's day and birthday I ask to have my hammock chair hung up and finally this year.........he hung it up. I love my husband....and I love my hammock.

My first wedding cake......thanks Ben!

So, one Sunday at church Ben tells me that he volunteered me for our friend's Sam & Nathalie's wedding. I assumed he meant singing or something but oh no, he volunteered me to make their wedding cake. I was a bit taken back as I have only dabbled in cake making......and just for our kids really. Anything that is not a cake from Safeway looks good but come on, a wedding? On the flipside I was totally flattered and enjoyed that my man had such great confidence in me. After thinking it over I decided to do it. They decided on Red Velvet with Cream Cheese icing. It turned out great and they loved it, however, I will NEVER make a wedding cake again! So much pressure....I mean it's someone's biggest day and I don't want to be responsible for screwing it up (which I almost did).

another kind of canvas

Ben getting his tattoo at Scapegoat
Very brave
It looked quite painful
It was fun to watch though....sorry babe!

Well, the day finally came. The day that Ben has been longing for for quite some time now. The tattoo has been something he's wanted since we were married. So here it is, 12 years later and he finally got it. If you are an adult and are reading this I am sure you can relate with the fact that there are lots of things we want and we get so close to getting whatever it is and then the money set aside is needed for something else. So for Christmas the deal was sealed. It took about 4 hours. I was able to go thanks to my parents watching the kids for us. Two of his friends also showed up to show some support. Thanks Peter and Benjie. I was pretty intrigued by the whole process and I am really glad that I was there to see it and be part of it. I think if he would have come home with it I would have freaked out a bit because it was quite a bit bigger than I was thinking. I love it though. Ryan did a great job. Sydney is excited for when daddy is going to get one with her name on it. It's going to be awhile however. My name......even longer.

November

This has been a busy month....lots of normal stuff and a bit of the extra and exciting too. We seemed to have lots of birthday parties and baby and bridal showers. The two highlights would be family picture day and Thanksgiving. Picture day. Wow! It started out a little on the rough side. I had my idea of how I wanted everyone to look, not specific but in general. The girls wanted to do the fancy dresses thing but that wasn't really what I was going for. We came up with some suitable compromises. We went to the Ace Hotel downtown Portland and our friend Kim started snapping away. The girls did great. It was a typical NW rainy day so most of the pics were taken inside. It was a lot of fun. Now, to order the prints and send them out!

Thanksgiving was a dream. We were there for four days of total relaxation. The girls had a blast playing here and there and everywhere. My parents and Grandparents were there as well as my Aunt Cindy, Uncle Wayde, Kellie and Blake. Everyone had an amazing time playing games, reading, sleeping, taking walks (or runs) and eating lots of good food. My dad took the girls fishing one day and they enjoyed that. Let's not forget the arcade........the girls got over 700 tickets to spend.

So much to be thankful for!

Halloween

This year was really fun. The girls were so excited about their costumes and getting all dressed up. We usually go around the neighborhood with one or more of the grandparents and let the girls trick-or-treat and then it's off to Neewollah at Church where they have a horse drawn carriage ride, games, food and a huge bounce house.
Noel had so much fun thinking up her "rock star" outfit. We even made her a guitar out of cardboard. She colored it. The metallic dress that Grammy made her last year was a big hit. Sydney was really looking forward to wearing the Tinkerbelle costume as Noel had worn it the year before. She looked very cute in it and had fun getting candy with her neighbor friends Bekah and Keke. I dressed up too......I went as a pirate. My Nanny McPhee costume didn't pan out......maybe next year.

Girly girls!

Just thought I'd share these cute pictures with you. A friend from church passed down this dress with matching purse and shoes that she made (well the dress anyway). Both of the girls love it!

Noel crafted her own wedding ring out of foil. Not bad, but let's not rush anything little lady!

Playing Chuck E. Cheese

Leah, Noel and Sydney had fun the other day playing around the house. They made their own Chuck E. Cheese where they could win tickets and then come to pick a prize. All these prizes on the couch were worth different amounts of tickets. It was so cute!

First Day of School Picture

Here is Noel and her good friend Savanna on their first day of school. Don't they look adorable. Noel was so excited about wearing her "SouthPole" jacket and "skinny jeans." Little fashion queen already.

Skip ahead two months to today..........Daddy , Sydney and I all went and had lunch with Noel at her school today. We got to meet her awesome teacher, Mrs. Ulbin. Noel really likes her teacher a lot and is doing well in first grade.

Computer Fun

Both Noel and now Sydney are enjoying playing fun little games on pbskids.org. They are learning computer skills while playing games and listening to stories as well as interacting with their favorite cartoon characters. This is a good alternative to watching TV and entertains them for short bits of time here and there so mom or dad can get some stuff done quick. If you have kids and haven't checked this out yet........do it! Playhouse Disney has a lot of great stuff too!

Painting for Grandpa and one for a friend!

The painting on the top is one I did for a friend (Tiffany) I wrote her life verse over the top of it. I think it turned out pretty great!

The second painting is the one I was "commissioned" to do for my Grandpa's 80th birthday. I wanted to show a certain part of his life and that was his mission work to Mexico. This was my first hand at a collage technique. I layered the whole canvas with writings, maps and descriptive words of my Grandpa and then painted over the top, leaving some of the words and pictures to show through. This isn't quite the finished project because I also painted the frame but here is the main idea. It was a lot of fun! Love you Grandpa!

Family Reunion 2008

Our family reunion this year was great. We all met in Manzanita, Or right on the beach for our bi-annual get together. We stayed in a really nice house along with Charlie and Emily, Dave and Carol, Rachel and Dan, Karen and Corey, Joel and Morgan, Brenda and Dave, Connie and Mike and all the kids. The girls had a great time getting to play with Leah, Denise and Angela. Both houses had lofts that the girls all made into their hideouts.

The weather was beautiful the whole time. It was perfect for everything we wanted to do. A whole group of us went running on Saturday morning......probably about 6 miles on the beach......my first beach run. It was great! Then we headed back for our Zumba class taught by Shawna, our own personal certified Zumba instructor! Zumba is and aerobic dance class including latin, african and hip-hop dance. It's a lot of fun if you're coordinated. Ha!

We had great meals together - how did we get so many amazing cooks all in one family? We had great laughs together (Charlie acting out synchronized swimming) and we even got to celebrate Grandpa Longs 80th birthday!

Can't wait until the next one!

Sydney's 4th Birthday

Sydney's Birthday was slightly chaotic from the start but it turned out really well. We were supposed to meet at Esther Short park but as it turned out, about 3,000 other people were already crammed into that park. That is exactly why I called ahead to make sure this was a good weekend to have it there. I think I talked to the wrong person. Oh well, we made it over to Marshall Park and everything worked out just great. The kids had a nice time playing on the huge playground while the adults enjoyed the shade on a hot day!

Can't believe little Sydney is already 4!

VBX with Cousins

Vacation Bible School was definitely Extreme this year! We got to have our cousins Sierra (10) and Kian (3) stay with us for a whole week and enjoy VBX together. The kids had a blast! The theme was POWER LAB, there were lots of experiments, great Bible stories and lots of awesome music. I think we had 260 kids attend this year. Kian and Sydney are in the second picture and in the third picture Sierra had her picture taken with the craziest guy there Jesse Atwood. In the last picture is Noel and her two good friends Chrissy and Savanna.

The winner for MVP for the week though was hands-down, GRAMMY (Ben's mom). She came over every morning at 7:30am and got breakfast going while I got the 4 kids ready. We had to be out the door by 8:15am. YIKES! She then stayed and cleaned up which was so nice. My family alone can cause a tornado in less than 10 minutes......4 kids, you guessed it............total disaster zone. A lot of work.........but a lot of memories too! The picture of Grammy at the top sums up how we were both feeling by the end of each day!

More artwork!

Here is some more art work. At the top is my first try at a mural......it's on our wall at home. Second picture is a mural that I did for my cousin Blake for his 15th birthday. It's in his room. We photo copied a picture off an album cover and put it onto a transparency and then I was able to paint over the image with black acrylic paints (thanks for the advice Denise). I really like how it turned out. It was a lot of fun.

The third photo is of one of the paintings that I completed in my art class. I was able to show it at the art show but it has a home..........our living room.

The fourth photo is of the second painting that I sold at the art show. yeah! That's one of my classmates in the picture. My art work will be in the studio for about 2 more weeks so we'll see what happens.

Meanwhile, in between children, dinner, showering, exercising and working on church stuff I am painting away!

Ch ch ch ch ch changes...................

Wow, so much has changed from the
"I'm in a band" entry. To make a long story short, the traveling worship band (or so I thought) ended up morphing into a band that would write and perform songs in local clubs and venues. It was very fun and cool to be writing songs and being in a band with Ben. So to make the long story short........I ended up realizing that singing in a band and making music was not what I woke up thinking about. I enjoyed it but felt as though I was going to keep the rest of the band back because my passion didn't match theirs. So, it's looking like a new lead singer has been found so look forward to some great music coming soon. Ben and I still hope to do something low-key together so we'll see where that goes.

In other news I have started taking an art class from a girl I went to high school with. She is having all the students do an art exhibit for emerging artists at a local yoga studio in town. I entered about 7 or 8 pieces in and she helped me price them (way higher than I would've thought). They were all pieces that we have hanging in our house. Noel and daddy helped me name all of them which was a relief to me because that is not my forte. I just got news yesterday that one of my pieces sold! My first one! It was the one that Noel named "lonely meadow."
I am still in complete shock but am very excited about pursuing a heavier interest in this. I have a new series of paintings started already so, I'll keep you posted!

Ace of Cakes anyone?

So, one of our favorite family shows is Ace of Cakes. Seen it? It's amazing what they can do with cake. We all enjoy seeing what Duff and the gang are going to come up with. They mostly work on fondant cakes. Needless to say the show inspired me to try my hand at it. I first attempted Annabelle's soccer cake above with homemade fondant. It tasted pretty good but was a bit greasy and harder to work with so for Noel's birthday I tried the store bought stuff (not cheap). It tasted.....well, let's just say it looked pretty but you didn't want to eat it. It was very fun to work with and Noel loved it. She actually designed the cake herself with the little curly bobs on top. The castle cake in the middle was for Leah's 7th birthday! Love this pink and princess phase. I'm glad I finally gave into it all. I plan on making something fun for Sydney's birthday this summer. She says she wants the same cake as last year. I am going to try and talk her into something else.

Cousins.....

We have been having a great time the last few months hanging out with cousins. Mom's and Dad's need breaks.........and cousins like to be together. We have had several slumber party's complete with movies and popcorn, playing dress-up, and also playing with our new favorite activity - "the treasure box." The treasure box is an idea that I borrowed from BSF which is a big tub full of rice and beans and all sorts of treasures like gold coins, rings, frogs, and all sorts of other miniatures. The kids can dig and sift for treasures and then record their findings. It keeps them occupied for quite a bit of time.

Also pictured above is the annual Easter Egg Hunt at Aunt Denise and Uncle Curtis's house. The kids look forward to that every year and have a great time with my cousins' kids.

Busy, busy, busy!

The New Year has already begun with a BUSY start. Life is good though. We are doing some extra planning at church for Easter this year. Every year we come up with cool ideas but never seem to see them realized, so this year we started early and have had a lot of extra meetings.

Ben and I are also part of a Worship band that is starting called the Separation State. It is a band that will be leading worship for teen events, conferences and whatever else comes up. We will basically have a set list of about 20 songs or so. Some original and some current worship songs. We will try and play 4-5 times per year as all of us have families and jobs already. It's exciting though. We had band pictures taken and everything. We actually rented a room in the Ace Hotel in downtown Portland and hired this amazing photographer. When we get the photos back I'll make sure and share them with you. So, all this is being done, hurried and put together for a possible show at Nampa First Church in April. Hopefully we will get it. A lot of work has been done in a short amount of time. We recorded a song (which you can hear on the Separation State's MySpace page), put together a MySpace page (Go Ben and Kevin), got photos taken and come up with lots of song ideas.
